Book 37 of 2018 👍 Finished August 29 I liked the more realistic rather than overly romantic way that relationships were handled in this series without completely throwing away elements of the genre (in comparison to the way things often are done re love triangles and romance). I think Aveyard subverted the trope very well (Also, showing sympathy to an abused person, without ever letting that excuse their own abusive actions.) including the way that things finished with the will they/won't they. The politics continued to be very interesting, with much more actually radical goals than usually seen in this type of fiction and an actual commitment to it, which was cool. I liked the ending, it was satisfying but not too neat and tidy or convenient. Book 36 of 2018 👍 Finished August 20 I didn't enjoy the second one of this series so much, so much so that I left it for quite a while (and actually started reading the final in the series before I realised I'd missed something and had to come back to this) The politics started to get quite interesting in this one, definitely felt there was some real world commentary going on and it felt well done. Some LGBT representation, which was integral to her storyline but not defining. She's kind of a bad guy which is a little stereotypical I guess but I think she is an interesting character. Flawed and bad ass, she may secretly be my fave. It's also made more explicitly clear (if it wasn't already) that Mare is a poc too so that was cool. I think she also continued to develop as a more relatable and multifaceted character throughout this one also.
